A person facing addiction may struggle with negative thoughts, pain, and feelings of anxiety, quite often. Finding relief can be a challenge. Even in the heat of the moment, one way to get some relief is learning to use biofeedback therapy. What is biofeedback therapy? How can it help you? What Is Biofeedback Therapy Used For?
Biofeedback therapy is a type of treatment technique designed to help people control their body’s reactions and processes. During this type of therapy, a person is able to learn to control breathing, heart rate, and even blood pressure. It may help you to reduce muscle tension. These may seem like uncontrollable reactions, things you cannot simply change. Yet, with this therapy, you’ll learn how to gain more control than you thought possible. When you do this, you may also learn how to control your body and mind better when it comes to addiction.
How Does a Biofeedback Therapy Session Work?
Though there are differences from one person to the next, there are several components of biofeedback you can expect:
- A series of electrodes or sensors are placed on your skin.
- The sensors work to monitor your body’s reactions, including breathing rate, heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, and muscle activity.
- You’ll monitor these numbers and signals on a monitor.
- When faced with stress, you’ll notice these numbers changing. Your heart rate and blood pressure may rise, for example. You’ll see this displayed on the monitor.
- You’ll attempt to control the reactions you have, trying to keep those numbers lower and in the normal range.
How does this help you? When engaged in biofeedback activity like this, a person learns that they have more control over their body’s reactions to stimuli than they realize. This can create a sense of accomplishment.
To achieve this, you’ll work through a series of exercises. Each one helps to train you how to control those bodily reactions. For example, you may engage in mindfulness meditation. This is a type of meditation that aims to reduce the presence of negative thoughts, replacing them with calming thoughts. It helps to improve concentration and focus. We may also suggest progressive muscle relaxation. This type of exercise helps a person learn to reduce the tension they feel in each muscle of their body. You’ll do this one muscle at a time.
Our last type of exercise is guided imagery. In this type of exercise, the goal is to focus the mind on positive and relaxing scenarios, which helps to stimulate relaxation and soothes the body and mind.
